In 2000, the five friends and top local winemakers Erich Scheiblhofer, Gerhard Kracher, Christian Tschida, Florian Gayer and Markus Altenburger founded Club Batonnage and together produce a superlative Austrian red wine from Burgenland. According to their own definition, they are a "group of vinophile revolters that some people might suspiciously fear as rebels". The very rare cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Blaufränkisch comes from the best sites around Lake Neusiedl, is an incredibly concentrated wine from highly ripe grapes with 15% alcohol and is bottled in an extraordinary bottle and sealed with wax. At the 2003 London Wine Challenge, the Batonnage already won a gold medal and, at the latest since it became the first Austrian red wine to be awarded the maximum score of 100 points by Falstaff, is no longer just considered an insider tip, but perhaps the best wine in Austria.
