Calabash (Cuja, Calebasse, Mate drinking vessel)
The calebasse is a mate drinking vessel used to prepare mate tea. It is a purely vegetable product and is made from dried bottle gourds. As this is a natural material, there may be variations in colour and size. These therefore make each calabash unique. A special metal straw, the so-called bombilla or bombilha, is used to drink the mate tea. The preparation of mate tea in the calabash, also called cuja, is celebrated in South America in the traditional way.
