The identity of Beychevelle is based on a legend. At the beginning of the 17th century, the castle became the property of the first Duke of Epernon. His power was so great that ships sailing on the Gironde had to lower their sails at the height of the castle as a sign of respect and loyalty to the duke. It was at this time that the estate acquired its emblem, a sailing ship, and its Gascon name, Beychevelle, meaning "half-mast".
