Popis

The Hubertus Brewery - how it all began

The history of the Hubertus Brewery also goes far back into the Middle Ages. At that time, the exclusive right to brew beer was granted by the Provincial Father to monasteries, castles and important towns. The town of Laa an der Thaya suffered from particularly turbulent times in the years around 1440. In order to revive the economy and trade, the town fathers tried to obtain the coveted brewing right. Finally, in 1454, Ladislaus Posthumus, Duke of Austria, King of Bohemia and Hungary, granted it to them for the town.

In return, he demanded that the citizens of Laa supply him with a barrel of beer on all high holidays - enjoying beer from Laa an der Thaya was a royal pleasure even back then. Until 1847, the town of Laa had always leased the brewing rights. In that year Anton Kühtreiber bought the brewing rights and the brewery, thus laying the foundation for today's Hubertus Bräu.
