Cointreau is a liqueur made from the peels of sweet and bitter oranges from the family of Triple Sec Curaçaos. The orange peels used for Cointreau come from sweet and bitter oranges from the countries of Haiti, Brazil and Spain. The peels are mixed and placed in alcohol for maceration. This is followed by distillation, during which the heated alcohol extracts the aroma from the orange peels. In the further stages of production, sugar, water and neutral alcohol are used to produce Cointreau.
