The winery is originally a joint venture between Robert Mondavi (Robert Mondavi Winery, California) and Baron Philippe de Rothschild (Château Mouton-Rothschild, Bordeaux). At a meeting of the two in Hawaii in 1970, they had the idea of founding a joint company that would produce a premium Californian red wine with the characteristics of a Bordeaux wine.
