Château Batailley is a Cinquième Cru estate according to the 1855 classification of Médoc châteaux and the flagship of the Casteja family and the Borie-Manoux trading house. The name of the estate supposedly comes from a battle (French: bataille) that took place some 600 years ago between the French and the English on the land where the estate is now located. The 55ha of vines (70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot) grow in a deep gravel bed with a subsoil of clay and limestone. The wine is aged partly in oak, partly in steel and partly in cement tanks and then aged for 18 months in oak barriques (50% of which are new).
